Role of the Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham

The Lord-Lieutenant is His Majesty’s representative in County Durham, Stockton on Tees (north of the river Tees) , Darlington and Hartlepool, with the overall duty of upholding the dignity of the Crown. The Lord-Lieutenant carries out a wide variety of duties working closely with the voluntary services, benevolent organisations and local businesses.

The main duties of the Lord-Lieutenant are to:

  • Represent The King, including duties with the armed forces and presenting certain honours, medals and awards.
  • Arrange visits by members of the Royal Family and escort Royal visitors
  • Liaise with local units of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army, Royal Air Force and their associated cadet Forces
  • Encourage the submission of worthy applications from people and organisations for nominations for honours and Kings Awards
  • Assess nominations for honours and The King’s Award for Voluntary Service
  • Chair the local Advisory Committee on Justice of the Peace, in liaison with the Ministry of Justice
  • Swear in new Magistrates
  • Participate in civic, voluntary and social activities within the Lieutenancy area
